Day 17 – OH! We’re Halfway There!

I managed to write my three research questions today.  I think I owe a lot of this productivity to CH for napping on the floor and giving me the soothing sounds of her sleep-breathing to use as my writing soundtrack. Thanks babes. Told you I’d mention it in the blog.

I’ve also mostly finished my bibliography and on top of that, I have worked out a draft for my methodology, theoretical framework and research gap sections. Phew! It’s been a pretty busy day but it’s really helped me get back in the mood to research. This part of the process has been amazing in getting me interested in the topic again. I think I forgot that this whole thing was my idea in the first place but I remember now. Hopefully I’ll get the whole thing done by Monday so that I can send it off to be checked and still have time to modify the sections that need work.

I can’t wait to go back tomorrow.

Uni on a Sunday? Hell yes!

Uni on a Sunday? Yes, please!

Oh yeah, I should probably note that my day started off amazingly. I know I dedicate a lot of space to writing about how much I hate the 23 bus but today, it blew my mind. I’m not going to say it came on time. Don’t be ridiculous. However, my first bus was so late that it coincided perfectly with the lateness of the 23. I waited less than a minute to connect my ride to university. Using public transportation fails to my advantage, hells yeah!

Here's to winning the bad luck lottery!

Here’s to winning the bad luck lottery!

Things I did today instead of working:

  • Attempted to do the Hoedown Throwdown with CH.

    Try it at home, y’all!

  • Laughed hysterically about Lemon-Stealing Whores.“If you were a lemon I would put you on my shelf and cherish you like I cherish all our lemons.”
  • Watched waaaaay too many After Hours videos. I really need to find my own Soren Bowie to argue with about movies and television. Where are all the passionate media dorks?
  • Ordered from Hell without buying a pizza. CH and I decided that if the same delivery guy keeps delivering, we’ll eventually invite him in to watch a movie on the computer with us. Yeah. That won’t give him the wrong idea at all.
  • Resentfully watched first-years as they went off clubbing while I waited for the bus. I miss fun.
  • Thought about Zack Morris and Kelly Kapowski:
    Aaargh so cute!

    Aaargh so cute!

I am still on such a Saved by the Bell kick. I have to make sure I include the show in my thesis somehow… Crap, now I’ve thought about it too much and I have to watch another episode before bed.

    *retro swoon*

Random totally awesome Bruno Mars lyrics:

I love you so, that’s what you’ll say
You’ll tell me baby, baby, please don’t go away
But when I play, I never stay
To every girl that I meet, yeah, this is what I say

Run, run, runaway, runaway, baby
Before I put my spell on you
You better get, get, get away, get away, darling
‘Cause everything you heard is true
Your poor little heart will end up alone
‘Cause Lord knows I’m a rolling stone
So you better run, run, run away, run away, baby

– Bruno Mars

Day 11 – Why Does My Heart Read So Bad?

It’s done. All done. Essays are ready to be handed out. Wooooo!

Dunzo. They better read the comments I worked so hard to write!

But now I’m so tired, I’m Al Green sad. I’m so emo when I’m sleep deprived. I think I’ll go get ready for bed, bunk down with a little Robin Nelson or Avi Santo. Talk TV to me.

Things I did today instead of working:

  • Cursed the 23 bus. HOW? HOW ARE YOU ALWAYS LATE?!  Also, why is the bus always full? It was 9am! Where did you people come from and where are you going because you definitely didn’t get off at the uni stop. Do people actually live in Mairangi? Where is this magical mystery place and how is it okay that their buses just don’t show up sometimes? I want answers!

    Is this Mairangi?

    Is this Mairangi?

  • Went to Maccas for breakfast because the bus didn’t come. I guess it’s not all bad.
  • Sang ‘Wicked Game’ in the office because no one else was in the building. Liberating.

Random dorky cheese-ball oldies lyrics:

Im tired of playing on the team
It seems I don’t get time out anymore
What a change if we set the pace face to face
No one even trying to score
Oh oh I can feel the magic of your touch
And when you move in close a little bit means so much
Ooh yeah, you’ve got to understand baby
Time out is what Im here for

One on one I wanna play that game tonight
One on one I know I wanna play that
One on one I wanna play that game tonight
One on one so slow

– Hall & Oates

Day 9 – Everybody’s Workin’ for the Weekend… Because They Slacked Off on Friday

I just had one of those days where you wake up badly and no amount of caffeine can make you feel better. I woke up feeling super groggy today but still managed to get to the bus stop where the bus was, of course, 10 or 15 minutes late. My social awkwardness obviously prevented me from being able to get mad at the driver to his face. Instead, I sulked on the seat and silently fumed while he took his sweet freaking time chatting to each person about their day as they loaded on to the bus.

I tried to do my readings and slides when I got to uni but it was just not happening so I printed out the articles I’ll be using for my thesis. I am so grateful that I am one of those dorks that kept every single course reader they ever had because as it turns out, they are not freely available on a database. Is this a sign that I will end up on Hoarders? For sure. At least I’ll have my media theories to keep me warm at night. There will be no ‘Scarcity’ if John Ellis is around…

Because I couldn’t get much done, I now have to spend the weekend at uni again. I should stop kidding myself and just bring a sleeping bag and air mattress in there already. At least this means I can lug my TV books to uni so I’ll always have them handy.

My babies. Off to their new home tomorrow!

My babies are off to their new home tomorrow!

Things I did today instead of working:

  • Snapchat fun with CH in the office. Hooray for spinning chairs and remediating weirdness.
  • Group mini-snooze in the office with NW and CH.
  • Found out that I cannot walk and recite the ‘Cool Girl’ description at the same time. Time to get back to spin class 😦
  • Seriously though, Gillian Flynn’s ‘Cool Girl’ concept is so interesting and definitely worth exploring. ‘Cool Girl’ comes in many forms including (but not limited to) the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. I’d love to write an essay about it but someone’s already nailed it.
  • Searched for Media Studies books at the secondhand book store. Got me some Foucault! As it turns out, I am capable of missing both people and theories that I once explored in class. I also bought a TV genre book with a great section on teen television. Perhaps it was work after all.

Random romantic lyrics that perfectly captures the emotional roller-coaster of writing a difficult essay for a subject that you love:

How many times
Did we give up
But we always worked things out
And all my doubts and fears
Kept me wondering, yeah
If I’d always, always be in love

Lenny Kravitz

Day 7 – I’m Coming Up (to Uni), So You Better Get This Thesis Started

I’m about to dive head first into my MA responsibilities tomorrow so I decided to try to recover from marking by buying somewhat unnecessary things for my desk. I’m so excited to finally have an answer to, “What are you up to these days?” Answering with, “Oh, I’m doing my Master’s” will no longer technically be a lie.

Dawson’s Creek readings, I’m coming for you.

Basically me these days

Basically me these days

My purchases today include:

  • Matching bowl, saucer and mug. Let’s not even pretend I’m not going to be living off instant noodles this year. Shout out to Indo Mie, the unofficial sponsor of my thesis.
  • A cookie box. Because I can’t have stale cookies, that’s just messed up.
  • A pretty handtowel… why not?
  • A snuggly blanket and pillow for when I’m curled up on the floor with John Ellis.

So the office is pretty much all set up. I have even started to develop somewhat of a caffeine habit, along with the rediscovery of my love for the word ‘problematic’. That’s all you need for a successful media thesis anyway, right?

Things I did instead of working:

  • Spent a significant amount of time trying to find the full song of the “love is just a game” part of the ‘Elephant Love Medley‘ and ultimately got distracted by another awesome song called ‘Love’s A Game’.
  • Accidentally slept on the bus on the way to my other tutoring job while I was trying to research. Seriously, my schedule is killing me.

This also happened on the bus. I can't drive either, buddy. Let's just leave it to those who know how.

This also happened on the bus. I can’t drive either, buddy. Let’s just leave it to those who know how.

  • Had a long and detailed discussion with JB and SH about contemporary sex scenes in film and television. What is the distinction between pornography and HBO?
  • Felt heartbroken when I saw my favourite student’s sad face when I told him I wasn’t going to be his tutor anymore. I’ll miss you too, my talented little Angelface.
  • Photoshopped BL’s head on Don Brash’s shirtless body. Be careful what you joke about…
  • Talked to  JFtD on Facebook. I used your chosen nickname. Are you happy now, procrastination enabler?

Random “Totally just found out this awesome song existed” lyrics:

Oh maybe I think, maybe I don’t, maybe I will, maybe I won’t
Find my way this time, I hear you calling me soon
One of these days , somebody stays and somebody pays
It happens all the time
I’ll be leaving, believing you wanted me to

Maybe I’m a fool
For walking in line
Maybe I should try to lead this time
I’m an honest mistake that you make
Did you mean to?

The Magic Numbers

Day 2 – On That Midnight Bus to Georgia (or Whatever Her Name Was)

After a pretty satisfying brunch with my old friend CC,  I had an extremely long day and night of marking essays and taking selfies. CH and I had a great time looking through essays and learning about the discourses of various items, as explained by first year students.

It was a very productive day and we ended up marking until 10.30pm but instead of boring you with the dilemma of “A- or B+”, I’d rather talk about the bus ride home. What I’m about to share with you is the tale of a young man who had the unfortunate experience of reaching the ‘no shits given’ level of inebriation at the exact moment he decided to call his companion on a very full midnight bus to the wops.

Let's pretend other people aren't here, even though they are sitting 5 cm away from us

Let’s pretend other people aren’t here, even though they are sitting 5 cm away from us

It started off innocently enough. I was sitting at the very front, head resting against the cool glass of the bus window, watching the city lights slowly pass by while I listened to ‘Shadow Dancing’. I was deep in thought about its lyrics. Was it simply a song about backlit performance art or does it mean something more illicit?

All of a sudden, I heard a very loud, obnoxious voice cutting through my Andy Gibb haze.

“Hey baby, I miss you!!”

I rolled my eyes and increased the volume on my iPhone.

“N-no, no baby. I want to come over. Can I stay there tonight? Can I?” He paused briefly. “Why do we never have sex anymore?! I love you too much. Are you dating two people? Are you???  I am yelling on the bus right now, I love you so much.”

Always a sucker for a scandalous soap opera, I laugh-coughed and discreetly tapped the pause button on my music. Clearly, Andy Gibb was going to have to wait. Apparently I wasn’t alone in this sentiment. As the music died in my headphones, I realised that everyone else was already deeply engrossed in this episode of The Bold and the Bawdy.

The drunk guy then proceeded to describe in great detail, the specific activities he wanted to enjoy with his phone companion when he sees her later that evening. A middle-aged man sitting in the seat adjacent to mine (who had been shooting the drunk guy dirty looks for the last seven minutes) apparently had enough because the next time the bus stopped, he stood at the front of the bus and crossed his arms.

“Oy, you with the phone!” He pointed at the drunk guy. “You need to lock it down!”

The drunk guy laughed. “Baby, this old man just told me to keep it down because of you. Can’t wait to see you guuuurl…”

“No mate, you need to lock this right down. Now.”

All of a sudden the other bus passengers seemed to find their voices, telling the drunk guy to shut up and threatening to smash his phone. Totally unfazed, the drunk guy continued to talk to his phone friend until he got off at the next stop, presumably to continue getting off. I pressed play on my iPhone to go back to my music. I think it’s safe to say I now have a completely different understanding of ‘Shadow Dancing’.

Things I did instead of working:

  • Ranted about the changes to Snapchat. No, I don’t want to text you. I don’t want to video-call you. That’s why I’m just sending you Snapchats!
  • Wondered whatever happened to CCs, the chips. They were the absolute best things in primary, along with O-Rings (which is unfortunately a name that only reminds me of the Challenger disaster now). Are Doritos the new CCs?
  • Laughed hysterically at Marxist puns
  • Had a meaningful discussion regarding the toll of the academic environment on one’s mental wellbeing

Random ruined lyrics of the day:

Do it light, taking me through the night
Shadow dancing, baby you do it right
Give me more, drag me across the floor
Shadow dancing, all this and nothing more

– Andy Gibb
