Saved by the Bell

Day 18 – Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow(‘s Workload)

I think I’m getting burnt out. I had planned on doing so much today but feel like I accomplished very little. There really isn’t that much left to do for my milestone but I think because I’m so tired, I just can’t get my brain to work anymore. Because of that I’ll keep this blog post very short so I can try to recharge tonight.

No more.

No more.

I forgot to eat at a reasonable time again so I spent most of the day curled up on the floor with hot water bottle. A hot water bottle and a little Schirato et al. After doing a little photocopying and a little thesis drafting, I realised the stress was actually just making the stomach-ache worse so I spent the rest of the day watching Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears videos.

I will never accept this break up. Never. Ramen Noodles For Life.

I will never accept this break up. Never. Ramen noodles for life.

Oh well. Sleep time now. Big day ahead.

Things I did instead of working:

  • Watched two episodes of Saved by the Bell. I still love you Zack Morris.
  • Watched the entirety of  JT’s VMA performance, including the too-short *NSYNC reunion

    Hi! Hi! Hi!

    Hi! Hi! Hi!

  • Danced to Bump N’ Grind and hated myself for it. Perhaps I should give my media degree back.
  • Sang along to the official karaoke version of Toxic on YouTube. This is why it’s so great when the uni is empty.

Random “you make tea cosies look damn sexy” lyrics:

People are so phony
Nosy cause they’re lonely
Aren’t you sick of the same thing?
They say so and so was dating
Love you or they’re hating
When it doesn’t matter anyway
Cause we’re here tonight

If you smiling, that should set the tone
Just be limber baby
And If you let go, the music should groove your bones
Baby just remember
Sing this song with me

Day 17 – OH! We’re Halfway There!

I managed to write my three research questions today.  I think I owe a lot of this productivity to CH for napping on the floor and giving me the soothing sounds of her sleep-breathing to use as my writing soundtrack. Thanks babes. Told you I’d mention it in the blog.

I’ve also mostly finished my bibliography and on top of that, I have worked out a draft for my methodology, theoretical framework and research gap sections. Phew! It’s been a pretty busy day but it’s really helped me get back in the mood to research. This part of the process has been amazing in getting me interested in the topic again. I think I forgot that this whole thing was my idea in the first place but I remember now. Hopefully I’ll get the whole thing done by Monday so that I can send it off to be checked and still have time to modify the sections that need work.

I can’t wait to go back tomorrow.

Uni on a Sunday? Hell yes!

Uni on a Sunday? Yes, please!

Oh yeah, I should probably note that my day started off amazingly. I know I dedicate a lot of space to writing about how much I hate the 23 bus but today, it blew my mind. I’m not going to say it came on time. Don’t be ridiculous. However, my first bus was so late that it coincided perfectly with the lateness of the 23. I waited less than a minute to connect my ride to university. Using public transportation fails to my advantage, hells yeah!

Here's to winning the bad luck lottery!

Things I did today instead of working:

  • Attempted to do the Hoedown Throwdown with CH.

    Try it at home, y’all!

  • Laughed hysterically about Lemon-Stealing Whores.“If you were a lemon I would put you on my shelf and cherish you like I cherish all our lemons.”
  • Watched waaaaay too many After Hours videos. I really need to find my own Soren Bowie to argue with about movies and television. Where are all the passionate media dorks?
  • Ordered from Hell without buying a pizza. CH and I decided that if the same delivery guy keeps delivering, we’ll eventually invite him in to watch a movie on the computer with us. Yeah. That won’t give him the wrong idea at all.
  • Resentfully watched first-years as they went off clubbing while I waited for the bus. I miss fun.
  • Thought about Zack Morris and Kelly Kapowski:
    Aaargh so cute!

    Aaargh so cute!

I am still on such a Saved by the Bell kick. I have to make sure I include the show in my thesis somehow… Crap, now I’ve thought about it too much and I have to watch another episode before bed.

    *retro swoon*

Random totally awesome Bruno Mars lyrics:

I love you so, that’s what you’ll say
You’ll tell me baby, baby, please don’t go away
But when I play, I never stay
To every girl that I meet, yeah, this is what I say

Run, run, runaway, runaway, baby
Before I put my spell on you
You better get, get, get away, get away, darling
‘Cause everything you heard is true
Your poor little heart will end up alone
‘Cause Lord knows I’m a rolling stone
So you better run, run, run away, run away, baby

Day 13 – How Deep Is Your Love For Teen Shows?

I dedicate this song to my thesis. It’s just me and you, baby.

I’m finally ready to start working away at this thing. I printed so many readings today. One of my supervisors recommended quite a few for me to read and I’ve finally finished printing them all off. I’m so excited just looking at all the titles like, ‘Tele-Branding in TV III’. It’s just calling out, “Reeeeeeead meeeee”. I was particularly pleased to find several articles from the late 80s and early 90s. So many write ups about teen television and how shows like Beverly Hills, 90210 were taking over and catering to young adults specifically. I also found an article about why women like the show Charmed and several Dawson’s Creek papers but what really got me pumped was when I saw articles about  Saved by the Bell.

It's all right, 'cause I'm saved by the...

It’s all right, ’cause I’m saved by the…

Saved by the Bell is so interesting to me because it’s an NBC show (ding-ding-dong, peacock!) and it’s one of those (if not the original) ‘after-school special’ sitcoms where they deal with totally complex issues. Really serious stuff like, homelessness, having to wear jeans to prom and of course, addiction to caffeine-pills (I’M SO EXCITED!!!).

In all seriousness though, it was incredibly influential in the way moral dilemmas are addressed in shows aimed at young adults. Dawson and Marissa would not have been as angsty had it not been for tireless efforts of  Zack Attack. Don’t even get me started on the trippy narrative structure. For a seemingly basic show, it had the weirdest elements like breaking the fourth wall, freezing time and the disorientation of the episode ‘Rockumentary’. Eat your heart out, HBO.

But despite its cheesiness, SbtB will always have a special place in my heart. Particularly because it introduced me to my first love, Zack Morris.

The exact photo that used to be in my locker

The exact photo that I had in my intermediate locker

I still remember the day I found out Mark-Paul Gosselaar was married. I had just finished watching a rerun of SbtB on TV4 and I was scrolling through his biography on a then-very basic version of IMDb. My mouth fell open and I started weeping because the biography stated that my beloved MPG had been happily married for  five years. I was 11 years old and the show had been off the air for eight years. It didn’t make it hurt any less. It was like I lost my future.

Obviously, I eventually moved on. However, you know how you sometimes have that cringe-worthy moment when you look back at your childhood and think, “Ugh, what was I thinking?” I was watching MPG’s current show, Franklin & Bash and I thought, “Oh yes. THAT’S what I was thinking”.

I had really great taste for a preteen. Look what I predicted.

I had great taste for a preteen. Look what I predicted.

I should probably take this moment to thank MPG for giving me a very specific type. There’s no point in even denying it. Clearly the blue-eyed, blonde prototype came from this personification of the 90s. Thanks, Zack Morris. I’ll do you proud.

Anyway, I think I’m going to have to reread or at least skim the readings I’ve already done in order to turn my annotated bibliography into prose. Putting it all together feels so official, it’s causing my procrastination urge to surge. Must. Keep. On. Track.

Things I did today instead of working:

  • Snapchat selfies. An embarrassing number of snapchat selfies
  • Left my computer on 24 Hours of Happy  while I did tute prep because apparently I don’t value my sanity
  • Became mesmerised by all the MPG photos. This blog post was only supposed to have that Captain &  Tennille song on it  but then I started thinking about him. I guess it’s true that you never really get over your first love…

Random “Oh THAT’s what they were saying!” lyrics:

My baby moves at midnight
Goes right on till the dawn
My woman takes me higher
My woman keeps me warm

What you doin’ on your back, aah
What you doin’ on your back, aah?
You should be dancing, yeah
Dancing, yeah
